Hero's Dilemma 01-10

Chapter 1, page 10

SURELY showing compassion towards an emotionally vulnerable rival will lead to no consequences whatsoever.

010 - So it begins

Well, at least coloring it didn't take as long this time. I think I'm getting the hang of this.
However, this will be the last page of this comic. I've run out of steam for a number of reasons.
For one thing, this part of the story is a lot of dialog. When it comes to graphic media like comics, visually active scenes like action and such are generally more fun than extended scenes of dialog (especially when nothing else is happening). And such scenes are even less fun to draw.
Secondly, it is taking me too long to do each page, which is more draining than the emotional return is worth. In other words, I will have to learn how to draw, color, and edit pages more time-effectively before I can do more comics (which I do plan to do eventually).
Finally, and maybe this is kind of a universal issue, but I kind of feel like I'm not really good enough yet. I feel like, for my age, I should be better at drawing. At least before taking on an endeavor of this size. My self-expectation is always a little higher than my self-perceived skill level. Either way, it has been a long time since I have drawn this much, and I still feel a bit out of practice. It's as if I had stopped going to the gym, and in my absence, everyone else has surpassed me in fitness and strength. Trying to return to the gym once more, the place feels oddly unfamiliar, and it's a little intimidating. Especially when there are teenagers here half my age who could out-run, out-lift, and out-wrestle me. Metaphorically speaking.

But enough of my ranting. How was your day?

(Also, don't ask what happened to Paragon's muscles. I'm still not very good at consistent proportions.)

Hero's Dilemma 01-09

Chapter 1, Page 9

Attack of the Elipses!

009 - Motive

Good Lord! I am SO done with color. Unless I find some way to color these things much faster, they're going to be black and white from now on. Adding color added at least two days onto this thing. Things like character sketches I will still do in color, but not series pieces like this. At least, not until I can make them good enough to sink that kind of time into.

Paragon doesn't know how to respond when things aren't what he expects. When a villain is kidnapping ambassadors or conjuring dark magic, he's all courage and one-liners. But as soon as she shows signs of weakness or embarrassment, he's all "this isn't in the manual" and "this isn't what's supposed to happen".

Hero's Dilemma 01-08

Chapter 1, Page 8

Once again, a scene that should include a sound effect does not have one. If it helps, I'll put it here: "WHAP"

007 -

Whoa! Now it's in color again? Oh man, you never know what to expect from me!
Seriously though-- I think this one turned out the best so far, (at least the first three frames,) since I took the time to both color and shade it.

So here's the deal: I'm probably going to do five or six more of these and end it not quite at the end of this chapter.
Then, if I feel like I'm getting enough support and enough people are actually reading these, I'll start on my secret poject from there. What might that be? Well, I can't give you the details right now, but it is completely unrelated to Paragon's story or world (for more about him, you'll have to visit my Deviant Art page).
But when (if) I get to it, it will update once a week and I'd like to do it in full color, but that may depend on the time I am able to put into it.

Hero's Dilemma 01-07

Chapter 1, Page7

You might not have picked up on it, with all her subtlety, but Sycorax is a bit miffed right now.

006 -Black Magic Woman

Remember when I said I was going to post a page every 3 days? Ha! That was funny. Well, it's been... what, week since my last post?
The good news is that I am much more pleased with the results than I have been in a while. After this month is over, I'm going to take my time and really try to put more effort into each page. My updates will be less frequent but more punctual and consistent.

Also, I have yet again neglected to add sound effect captions, but I'm sure you can use your imagination.

Hero's Dilemma 01-06

Chapter 1, Page 6

 005 - Escape

Oh snap, son. Now you've gone and made her angry.

I've been experimenting a bit with pencil shading. I still have a lot to learn-- especially using the right shades to make it come out right after scanning, etc., but I think I like it more than what I did with the previous page.

And, of course I don't realize that I forgot to put in the sound effects until just before posting it...

Hero's Dilemma 01-05

005 - Tradition

So you may have noticed two things. Firstly, I didn't color the comic this time. Secondly, I'm posting it two days late.

To answer the first item... as I've colored the previous pages, I sometimes find that individual frames that I thought turned out especially well looked less so after being colored. On top of that, I want to do more exploring into potential styles and techniques, and drawing black and white may help with that-- focusing more on line shading than CG coloring.
To answer the first and second items... I'm way behind schedule, so posting in black and white will save me a load of time, so maybe I'll be able to finish on time this way.
Plus, I seriously doubt I'd be able to keep up doing EVERY page in color indefinitely.

So... how does it look uncolored? Should I keep doing them this way? Yes, I still have to learn things like shading and all that so it doesn't look so unfinished... but I want to try it out.
So leave a comment (that is a thing you can do) and let me know what you think.

Hero's Dilemma 01-04

Chapter 1, Page 4

004 - Villain Identified!

Hooded Figure is unmasked, revealed to be a pudgy sorceress. Who'd have thought it?

Those of you unfamiliar with Hero's Dilemma's original incarnation, I have a thing for designing my characters with a variety of body types, as opposed to the "typical" comic book method of making almost everyone physically perfect (or what the artist considered so). So Sycorax, for instance, is... not "fat", but a little plump. Another is 6-foot tall and built like a scarecrow. Another still is 4-foot-something. Some of them are what one might call "ideal". For one, Paragon has nothing to complain about. Others are taller, shorter, heavier, thinner, etcetera. Because people come in all types. I often use the analogy of a dart board that represents a random slice of humanity. A dart (representing a super power) is then thrown at the board. It could hit someone who looks like a descendant of the Greek pantheon, and it might land on someone who looks like what people look like in real life.

Hero's Dilemma 01-03

Chapter 1, Page3

003 - Intervention

First things first:
Yes, I am aware that the table looks much smaller here than in the second page. Poor planning on my part. It should really be somewhere in between the two sizes shown (probably about five feet wide and long).
Speaking of which, I have also notice that all of the candles are gone. I forgot to ink them in while drawing, then forgot to edit them in during the digital stages of production.
I guess I'm still used to writing, where exact dimensions don't have to be given, and things won't disappear if you neglect to mention them every paragraph. It's a learning experience.

Secondly, during the month of April, I will endeavor to finish this chapter of Hero's Dilemma, and maybe start on the second. But I will only do that if A) I finish chapter 1, and B) I even decide to continue HD in comic form. We'll see.

Paragon is a very traditional hero. This means that he drops cheesy one-liners and will often strike a heroic pose.

Hero's Dilemma 01-02

Chapter 1, page 2

002 - A Perfect Match

Honestly, I got a little impatient doing this one because I want to get to where I can draw super heroes. I'm getting genuinely excited about the upcoming pages : )

Also, I made the image slightly larger. Does it look better that way?

This is a test

Just testing out the new blot. Taking it out for a test drive.
